Exhibition in Rome: Alexander Calder

Until 14th February 2010, at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome you can find the first one-man exhibition of works by the most innovative sculptor of the 20th century: Alexander Calder. The American artist is famous all around the world for his works in movement, that use the space in an innovative way. Among Calder’s most famous works there is the “Teodelapio” of 1962, realized for the city of Spoleto, and also “Pittsburgh”, of 1958, located in the airport of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The tribute of Rome to the great American artist is really unique in form and scale: a series of “mini-exhibits”, each of which focusing on one aspect of the artist’s varied output. In addition to hanging and standing mobiles, the exhibition will include “stabiles” (non-kinetic works), monumental sculptures, works on paper and items of jewellery.
For this exhibition, the Calder Foundation has made available its entire collection of over one thousand works, the most significant of which selected for display together with major pieces on loan from the world’s greatest museums, including the Guggenheim, the MoMA, the Whitney and the National Gallery in Washington.
