In the fourth centenary of the death of Michelangelo Merisi, called Caravaggio, at Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome there is an exhibition devoted exclusively to the artist from Lombardia, that can be visited from 20 February to 13 June 2010.
The exhibition on Caravaggio presents a rich gallery of works from Italian and foreign museums, organized in a completely new perspective: a journey not strictly chronological, but to highlight similarities of themes and subjects, based on a severe critical investigation of the paintings that did not fail to trace the history, finding changes of ownership and transfers.
Using a huge amount of documents and literary sources, it was decided to select for the exhibition only certainly autobiographical works, excluding paintings variously attributed to the workshop of the painter.
The result is a clear and coherent framework that offers the opportunity to dive deep in the evolution of the artistic language of Caravaggio, unique and revolutionary, often suffered, surely astounding in its magnificent poetry.
The decision to place at Scuderie del Quirinale, home of the show, especially works from outside Rome, has to be understood as the desire to make the entire city an almost complete exposure anthology of Merisi, offering visitors the chance to admire the paintings commissioned to the artist for the city’s churches directly inside them.
Why not take advantage, therefore, of the exposure to rediscover the architectural beauties of the capital?
