When Pope Sixtus IV decided to build the Sistine Chapel, he called the greatest Tuscan and Umbrian artists of that time (Botticelli, Signorelli, Cosimo Rosselli, Ghirlandaio, Perugino and Pinturicchio), which decorated the side walls with frescoes depicting two major cycles stories from the Old and New Testaments. The ceiling, originally painted by Pier Matteo d’Amelia with a simple blue sky studded with golden stars, was redecorated by Michelangelo for Pope Julius II della Rovere.
